Through the Clouds, the Word of God Was the Light on My Path
Through the Clouds, the Word of God Was the Light on My Path

There are seasons in life when the clouds feel heavy. As a single parent, I have faced hard times and had to make difficult choices for my children. When I look back, I see the sacrifices, but I also see the light that helped me keep going: the Word of God.
My story is not about having everything figured out. It is about ambition, faith, determination and resilience: continuing to take the next step, even when the road ahead is not clear.
The sacrifices I made for my children
I wanted my children to have the opportunity to learn and move forward. There were times I went without food so I could pay for extra classes to help educate them.
That is not an easy thing to write. A parent should not have to choose between meeting their own needs and supporting their children’s education. But that was part of my reality at the time. I did what I felt I needed to do to put them through.
I am sharing this because many parents make sacrifices quietly. People may see the effort you put into your children without knowing what it has cost you. If you are in a season like that, I want you to know that your struggle is seen. Your love and care matter, even when no one else knows the full story.

I put my own education on hold
Supporting my children meant putting my own education on hold. For a time, their education came first, and I focused on getting them through.
I do not share that as a rule for every parent. Each family’s circumstances are different, and no one should feel that they must erase their own hopes to prove they love their children. I am sharing it because it is part of my story: I made sacrifices for them, and I kept believing that my own journey could continue too.
Putting my studies on hold did not mean I had given up on learning. It meant that, at that point in my life, I made a choice about where my attention needed to go. There were hard times, but I held on to the hope that a pause did not have to be the end.
The Word of God was my light
Faith was central to how I moved through those clouds. The Word of God was the light on my path when the way ahead was difficult to see.
Psalm 119:105 says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105, KJV). That verse speaks to me because a lamp does not necessarily show you the whole road at once. It gives light for the step in front of you.
That is how I understand faith in a difficult season. I might not know exactly how everything will work out, but I can keep moving forward with God’s Word as my guide. Faith does not mean that there are no clouds. It means that the clouds do not have to be the only thing I can see.
My earlier experiences as a parent also asked me to keep going when things were hard. I have spoken before about standing up for my child, even when I was not fluent in English, and about putting my education and career on hold while I taught my children at home for a year and a half. Those parts of my journey are not the whole story, but they remind me that I have pulled through with faith before.
I am returning to my own education
Today, my education is moving forward again. I have completed my degree, I am now completing my master’s, and I intend to complete my doctorate.
When I think about that, I see more than qualifications. I see a woman who paused her own education to put her children through, and who is now continuing her own studies. I see ambition that did not disappear, faith that helped me through difficult seasons, determination to keep going and resilience built one step at a time.
I am proud of the progress, but I also know that every person’s journey looks different. There is no single timetable for reaching your goals. Sometimes life asks you to pause. Sometimes you have to put one responsibility first. A pause does not have to mean your dream is over.

To the parent making quiet sacrifices
If you are a single mother, or a parent carrying a lot on your own, I want to encourage you: do not measure your whole life by one difficult season. What you are facing now is part of your story, but it does not have to be the end of it.
If you have had to set something aside for your children, be gentle with yourself. Your hopes still matter. When the time is right and the opportunity is there, you can return to what you put on hold. Your path may take longer than you expected, but you are still allowed to keep moving towards your goals.
And if you are able, do not be afraid to reach out for support. Parenting and providing can be a lot to carry alone. Accepting help does not make you less determined; it is one way of caring for yourself and your family.
I also hope that anyone supporting a parent will remember that quiet sacrifices can be difficult to see from the outside. A kind word, a listening ear or practical support may mean more than you realise.
Keep taking the next step
My journey has included hard times, sacrifices and moments when I had to put my children first. It has also included faith, ambition and the decision to continue my education. I am still working towards my goals: completing my master’s and, in time, my doctorate.
I share this story not because I have every answer, but because I know what it is to keep going through the clouds. The Word of God has been the light on my path. My hope is that my story reminds another parent that hardship does not take away your worth, and a delayed dream can still matter.
Keep believing. Keep taking the next step. Let faith guide you, and remember that your story is still unfolding.
